Polar Bear Watching Churchill: An Arctic Safari

From Winnipeg’s cultural gems to the Arctic wilderness of Churchill, this journey was unforgettable. Seeing polar bears up close, exploring historic sites, and embracing the frozen beauty of the north made for a breathtaking change of scenery!

My journey began with a flight from Newark to Winnipeg, where I explored the city’s cultural gems—the Winnipeg Railway Museum, Dalnavert House, and the Art Gallery—before heading north on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to Churchill.

In Churchill, the “Polar Bear Capital of the World,” I embarked on thrilling tundra tours, spotting the majestic bears roaming the icy landscape. One of many interesting polar bear facts I learned from our knowledgeable guides is that their fur is pigment-free, but because there are so many layers of it, the surface gives off the same white effect that multi-layered cling wrap does. Then of course, oils from their diet and residues from their surroundings influence the coat’s hue. Their skin is black underneath.

The experience of seeing them up close was surreal. Beyond wildlife, I visited the Itsanitaq Museum to learn about Inuit history, explored the eerie wreckage of the Miss Piggy plane crash, and immersed myself in the town’s rugged charm.

After days in the Arctic wilderness, I returned to Winnipeg for a final night before heading home. Churchill left me in awe—its untamed beauty and extraordinary wildlife made this trip truly special.
